Understanding a fact is not to have an opinion about the fact but to have the capacity to look, to look without judgment, to look without words. I do not know if you ever looked at a bird or a tree, or looked at the squalor and filth of these streets – to look. (I am using the words ‘squalor’ and ‘filth’ in the dictionary sense, without any emotional content behind those words.) When you are capable of looking, fear is gone.
