Thought is not intelligent. It’s a mechanical reaction, running on outdated assumptions, like a program that can’t rewrite itself. But something deeper can. Bohm called it intelligence, a subtle force not born in the brain but acting through it. It sees the illusion of the self, questions the programming, and touches the brain directly, freeing it from conditioning.

Without this, thought becomes dangerous. It defends the false self at any cost, even if it means distorting truth. That self-centered conditioning isn’t just limiting, it’s an enslavement. And no other kind of freedom means anything,
unless we are free from that.

==================

This is David Bohm the quantum physicist. I’ve watched many of his talks and interviews and read much of his material on the subject of mind. What I think he is saying here is that we have a consciousness/intelligence that as far as we know seems to exist outside the mind/brain/ego/self. The mind/brain/ego/self is a blob of thoughts/memories/conditioning that we have conglomerated into what we think is our consciousness/intelligence, but it’s actually a reflection of itself. So, if we could access insight through pure consciousness, which is free of conditioning by the mind or external phenomena, then perhaps we could incorporate this insight into our thinking in order to free ourselves of the conflict and turmoil that exists in society. It’s all very esoteric and he was a very conflicted person because of his involvement in the development of the nuclear bomb. He believed strongly that if enough people could access their higher self, that it would trigger a transformation in the global human consciousness. He helped organize mass prayers around the world to try and trigger these events. His interviews and discussions and deep friendship with Jiddu Krishnamurti helped spread Zen Buddhism and other Eastern ideas in the Western world.
