The following is an extremely sophisticated approach to logic (philosophy). The conversion between Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens is an inafallible one that takes great understanding.
The simplest explanation re; Modus Ponens is that it creates a proposition which are not mutually exclusive, therefore can only be a true stated premise based on its antecedent.
In Modus Tollens the consequence of what originally is thought to be true is contradicted.
I am talking about the hipster lifestyle when I speak of 'appearance'. Referring to such profile (hipster) is a choice that is dominant in society circa 2014. Therefore the premise is universal in its attributes. To pretend about "anything" is a generality "going on appearance" = Modus Ponens.
To pretend I am your "friend" contradicts the appearance of another particular thing "strictly on appearance" = Modus Tollens.
Modus Ponens: I do not pretend about anything, you should not like me strictly going on appearance. That is the rule where I live. You fail to act rather than selling out.
Modus Tollens: I do not pretend to be your friend, you should not like me strictly on appearance. That is the rule where I live rather than selling out.
What I am suggesting is that prejudice is prevalent in a culture that lacks romance within the stereotyping of image or in this case the hipster lifestyle.
