I have never believed in punishing others, because punishment is something that comes self induced.
It is when someone or something tries to subjugate their attempt in the same manner whereas intention appeals for it.
I recognize punishment as some form of a persuasion. A informal type of accusation. From which it is made against someone for something that they weaponize, either in their thoughts, or in their words that carry a causal action over consequence. This consequence is a fear based reality.

My point in all this is that I know what makes me who I am.

If for a minute anyone invades my personal understanding (i.e. boundaries) by seeing they test me? Test me for my own beliefs. That's when they've set the traps, escape back into their foxholes, never to be seen again. Think about it.
